For the second UpNorth Music concert, we're collaborating with our friends at the Norwood Village Green Concert series. Three great acts from the UpNorth Music recording project will perform in the series annual Singer/Songwriter concert.

Featuring:
Celia Evans
John & Orion Kribs
Jim & Gwen Tracy

Celia Evans
An ecologist by profession, Celia’s song-writing is heavily influenced by the natural world. She believes that the Adirondacks is the landscape in which she belongs. Mark Erelli has said of this performer, "The songs of Celia Evans always manage to find tenderness in relationships, family and the natural world. If Kate Wolf had forsaken Califorina for the Northern Adirondack, she might have sounded something like this."

John and Orion Kribs
John has been part of the North Country music scene for a long time. Many in the region know him as a member of the well-loved bands Raquette River Rounders and Johnny & The Triumphs. He now performs in the band Delia. Johns' songs have been used on National Public Radio's Car Talk and published by CBS and Boptalk Music. An accomplished guitarist, John is equally at ease on fretless bass, mandolin, and banjo. His voice has been described by reviewers as "clear," "smooth," "haunting" and "captivating." During his long career John has served as opening act for such artists as Arlo Guthrie, The J. Geils Band, James Cotton, Joe Cocker, Jorma Kaukonen, Robert Cray, Chubby Checker, John Hammond, Henny Youngman, Dave VonRonk, Sha Na Na, Johnny Copeland, Norman Blake, Sam Bush, The Clancy Brothers and others. He has performed in Denmark and Norway as well as throughout the US and Canada. John’s son Orion follows in his dad’s musical steps, bringing his own unique voice and style of song writing to the stage.

Jim and Gwen Tracy
Always interested in being a musician, Jim Tracy has been a member of several bands in and around his hometown Big Moose. His daughter Gwen remembers waking up Saturday mornings to the sound of her father playing guitar, and her mother singing in the house. Gwen is the lead vocalist in Delia, a band that allows her strong blues voice to shine.

What's UpNorth Music?

In July 2006, the New York State Music Fund, a grant program of Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors, awarded North Country Public Radio $330,000 to increase access to contemporary music by audiences throughout the North Country.

With this grant, NCPR created UpNorth Music. The program is designed to expose audiences in the North Country to musicians of all genres, and give those musicians expanded access to audiences.

Local Project Partners

Here’s how it will work:

Step One: Recording Music Perfomances

Beginning in November 2006 NCPR will be bringing its state-of-the-art remote multitrack studio to a dozen locations thoughout our listening area. Music acts will be scheduled for their own two-hour recording sessions, during which they can record as many as six songs. We will then take the multitrack master back to NCPR’s studio in Canton, produce a fully-automated mix of each song and present the musicians with a mixed master CD. Each music act will also be compensated $100 for their time.

Musicians will be asked to sign a release allowing North Country Public Radio to use their recordings on air, online, and as part of a future CD release. This release will also indicate that the musical act has the right to use their recording in any way they wish with no restrictions.

Step Two: CD Compilation

Once all of the recording sessions are complete and mixed, we will be producing a multiple-disc release of the performances that really stand out. We plan an initial pressing of 5,000 copies and will have each song professionally mastered. Each music act on the CD will be compensated $250 per song used. CDs will be sold at retailers throughout New York State, as well as online. Prices for the CDs will be kept very reasonable in order to allow exposure of the music to the widest possible audience. Complimentary copies of the discs will also be available to the musicians included on the compilation.

Step Three: UpNorth Music Concert Series

In the second year of the project we will be staging a series of concerts around the North Country to allow audiences to get to know the musicians and their music even better. As with the CD project, we will be selecting the very best musicians to participate. Each music act will be compensated $500 plus travel expenses for their participation in a concert.
